How to Throw the Most FETCH Mean Girls Party

“Raise your hand if you have ever been personally victimized by Regina George.”  Mean Girls – the movie we all still love. If you’re like me, you can probably quote the entire film word for word. It’s a movie millennials grew up on, and still continue to worship and quote in real life. Not only is it hilariously funny, but in some ways we’ve lived that movie. “Girl world” can be pretty cut-throat, especially in high school and I’ve met my fair share of Reginas… Bye Felicia!

My best friend is quite the “Mean Girls” enthusiast and quotes the movie on the reg. Our favorite quote is “Danny Devito, I love your work!” I can’t really explain why, but it is forever my favorite movie quote.  Damian is hands down the best character of the film, in my opinion.

I decided to throw my bff a surprise themed “Mean Girls” birthday party, and we had a blast! Surprisingly,  there’s not a ton of ideas out there for a MG party… Read on for all the details covering how to plan out your very own fetch “Mean Girls” event!

(A complied list of all supplies and decorations will be at the bottom)

First things first… the main color of “Mean Girls” is pink.  I wanted to incorporate gold, rose gold, and pinks into my decorating theme, and I did just that.

I found this adorable glitter “That’s So Fetch” banner on Etsy for only $15 (that’s with shipping). You can’t make your own for that price.

Underneath the “Fetch” banner, you will see an adorable Tissue Paper Tassel Garland. I actually purchased it at a local party shop in Nashville called, Shindigs and Celebrations. You can get the same garland on Amazon if you don’t live in Nashville. However,  I try to support local businesses as much as possible, and would encourage you to as well!

Going with my pink/gold theme, I was very anal when it came to choosing balloons. Party City has a great selection of confetti, however they did not have what I wanted. I wanted gold or rose gold confetti to fill clear balloons with. After visiting Party City twice in one week, I decided they weren’t going to magically get what I wanted by the party date (they were out of all gold confetti AND pale pink balloons… insert “annoyed af face”). I started searching online and of all places, Wal-mart, yes Wally World, had what I wanted – CONFETTI BALLOONS AND PINK BALLOONS. I dramatically rushed over and bought more than necessary.

A pack of 6 gold confetti balloons were only $2! I bought 2 packs (I only used one), and also a pack of pink and gold balloons. You can take your balloons to Party City and they will blow them up for 99 cents each… when you only paid $1.50-$2 for a whole pack, you’re actually saving money versus if you bought the balloons originally at PC.

You can buy the gold cut out “Happy Birthday” banner at Shindigs.

Now, I did buy my “2” and “7” number balloons (my friend turned 27) at Party City. They’re $9.99 each and don’t charge you to fill them with helium. If you bring in outside numbers, you may pay less but will have to pay at least $5 to fill up each balloon.

TIP: Confetti balloons do best if you add the “high float” option for helium, so they last longer. Pick your balloons up the DAY of. You also need to put your balloon order a day or two in advance.

Notice that pretty sequined table-cloth cover? Rose gold sequins, available in many sizes and shapes on Amazon.

Also, notice some of the snacks…

Cheese and Crackers – “Ok, so I got enough cheese and crackers for eight people. Do you think that’s enough?”
Candy Canes – “FOUR for youGlenn Coco! You go, Glenn Coco!”
Banana Nut Muffins – “Can we assign someone to butter your muffin?”

Other ideas (that I did not do but thought of…):
1. Taco Bell 12 pack of tacos – Karen asks Regina, “Do you wanna go to Taco Bell?” and Regina replies, “I CAN’T GO TO TACO BELL, I’M ON AN ALL-CARB DIET. God, Karen, you are SO stupid!”
2. Toaster Strudels – Gretchen Wieners dad invented them
3. A stick of butter (for decoration…) – “Is butter a carb?”
4. Cheese Fries – “Whatever, I’m getting cheese fries.”
5. Candy bars – or, “Kalteen bar” which you’ll prob remember is a Swedish nutrition bar meant for weight gain that Cady tricked Regina into eating

I also served Pink Strawberry Margarita Punch. My friend’s liquor of choice is tequila, and HELLO, sticking with the pink theme!

What makes Mean Girls so hilarious is all of the quotes and one-liners. I wanted to make sure that not only my friend’s favorite quotes were featured, but that she was highlighted as well – it was HER birthday after all! I printed some of my favorite pictures of her at Walgreens, and made conversation bubbles for each photo. I bought Crayola markers, and colored conversation and bubble thoughts  (printed off of Google Images).

Quotes used:
– “You can’t sit with us!”
– “Is butter a carb?”
– “She doesn’t even go here!”
– “Don’t have sex! Because you will get pregnant and die…”
– “Boo, you whore.”
– “Why are you so obsessed with me?”
– “I’m a mouse, duh.”
– “Danny Devito! I love your work!”
– “You’re like, really pretty.”

These precious copper photo holders (sticking’ to my theme!) were only $8.98 for 10 on yep, Amazon.

If you remember where Cady and Janis are trying to formulate a plan to take down Regina, they write their bullet points on a chalkboard. You can get an inexpensive chalkboard on AmazonMichael’s or at Old Time Pottery, and re-create the list. I happened to already have a chalkboard on hand!

The list is composed of (all capital letters!):

The cake was so fun to come up with… a good friend of mine is a brilliant baker in Nashville, and he did an outstanding job on the cake. King’s House of Sweets, Baker: Cortez King, 615-944-2423. I almost got a Burn Book cake but thought this was way more creative.

The quote, “I wish we could all get along like we used to in middle school… I wish I could bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles and everyone would eat and be happy,” was PERFECT inspiration. He made a five layer cake, each level a different color of the rainbow, with pink ombre’ icing from the bottom to the top. Written atop was, “That’s So Fetch!,” and black smiley faces graced the top and around the cake. It was perfect and so, so, so delicious! The cake was m&m flavor (matches the rainbow theme!).

A Mean Girls party isn’t complete without a Burn Book. You can buy a Mean Girls journal from Amazon, and paste your own pictures of the birthday gal or guy! I cut up 5-6 photos of my friend and taped them throughout the book.

Set up a station filled with pens and markers, and ask people to write messages for the birthday person. You can also buy stickers, glitter, sequins, or other materials if you so wish. I would have bought glitter but the thought of drunk people tossing that around my house was less than appealing (I also have 2 cats and don’t want them eating glitter.)

This was a fun activity, especially after everyone got a few drinks down. I set the Burn Book on the entryway table, with gifts on the opposite side, that way people would see it on their way out if they hasn’t signed it yet.

The last detail of the part boiled down to me, your hostess, Regina George. I bought a $1.50 tank top and a $5 purple bra at Wal-Mart and made my own outfit. It was perfect, and everyone thought it was hilarious. I paired my shirt with a pair of skinny black jeans, and gladiator sandals. I naturally have blonde hair, so I straightened it and did a simple make-up job. It was an easy costume and added more humor to the vibe… and for under $10!

This party was so much fun to throw, and I hope you find some inspiration in case you too want to hose your own “Mean Girls” theme! Leave any comments of ideas you have too!

xoxo, Amber
